The Reds took a first half lead through Dirk Kuyt but Barnsley refused to be beaten. On a famous Cup shock The Tykes equalised in the 58th minute when Stephen Foster headed home. As the game went into added time it looked as though the tie was heading for a replay at Oakwell. There was however late, late drama as Brian Howard looked to have been fouled in the area for a Barnsley penalty, but it was waved away. Seconds later Howard won the ball back and powered his way to the edge of the area before smashing home the winner. Barnsley had knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup at Anfield on a legendary day for the then Championship side.
