Les Bleus were trailing 17 - 10 at halftime and things got worse after the break when All Blacks legend Jonah Lomu scored his second try of the match to stretch New Zealands lead. France were 24 - 10 down but suddenly fought back with two drop goals and two penalties from Christophe Lamaison before the try of the match took France ahead. Fabien Galthie kicked down the sideline for Christophe Dominici to chase. A favourable bounce allowed Dominici to grab the ball and fly down the wing to score.

The French were unplayable and went on to score two more try's and win the game 43 - 31 to book their place in the 1999 World Cup Final against Australia.
