This print is the perfect gift for any Crystal Palace fan as an iconic football moment is captured in this classic book cover poster.
This version depicts the winning goal in arguably the greatest FA Cup Semi Final ever played. Liverpool faced Crystal Palace at Villa Park and were huge favourites. The Reds were soon to be crowned League Champions and were going for an historic Double.
Palace had been demolished 9-0 earlier in the season at Anfield and were 1-0 down at half time in the Semi following an Ian Rush goal. The signs were not good for the Eagles but within the first minute of the second half Palace were level when Mark Bright smashed past Bruce Grobbelaar. With 20 minutes to go Crystal Palace took a shock lead when Gary O'Reilly bundled home. Liverpool were stunned but rallied with two goals in the final ten minutes, first Steve McMahon fired past Nigel Martin. Two minutes later the Reds were awarded a penalty when Steve Staunton was fouled, John Barnes fired home and Liverpool led 3-2 with only 7 minutes remaining. Miraculously Palace found another equaliser in the 88th minute when Andy Gray headed home. The final whistle blew and the match went into Extra Time.
No goals were scored during the first half of Extra Time. Palace found the winner in the fourth minute of the second half of Extra Time. Andy Gray's corner was flicked on by Andy Thorn and Alan Pardew muscled his way between two defenders to head home! Palace were 4-3 up and then held on to record one of the FA Cup's biggest upsets. The Palace fans were 'glad all over' as their team headed to Wembley to face Manchester United in what would prove to be another stunning match.
The title of the book “Thorn flicked it on… and it’s gone in!” is taken from the BBC commentary by the late great John Motson.
