Leeds had won the first leg at Pride Park 1-0 and no team in Play-Off history had ever won the overall tie after losing the first leg at home. History was not on the Rams side!

To make matters worse Leeds soon took the lead in the second leg making it 2-0 on aggregate. Frank Lampard brought on Jack Marriott late on the first half and with his first touch he levelled for Derby County. Within a minute of the second half Derby took the lead on the night and levelled the tie when Mason Mount scored. Then the Rams shocked Leeds by taking an overall lead when Harry Wilson converted a penalty.

United came back and levelled the tie overall when Stuart Dallas scored to make it 2-3 on the night but 3-3 on aggregate. Gaetano Berardi then was then sent off for Leeds United before Marriott scored his second to give County a 4-2 lead on the night. Just to add an extra dramatic twist, Derby were reduced to 10 men for the final minutes as Scott Malone was also sent off.

A breathless game ended and Derby County had achieved the impossible by overturning a first leg home defeat. They had won 4-2 on the night and the overall tie by 4 goals to 3. The Rams were heading to Wembley to play Aston Villa in the 2019 Championship Play-Off Final for a place in the Premier League.
