An iconic football moment is captured in this classic book cover poster.
This edition depicts Kevin Phillips late winner for Sunderland against arch rivals Newcastle United at a rain soaked St James’ Park in August 1999.
Under fire Newcastle manager Ruud Gullit had controversially dropped Alan Shearer to the bench for the biggest game of the season, prompting many pundits to suggest his team sheet had been a suicide note! Kieron Dyer scored the opener for Newcastle in the first half before Niall Quinn equalised in the 64th minute.
However it was Sunderlands goalscoring hero ‘Super Kev’ who sealed a famous win for the Black Cats. Phillips was put through on goal in the 75th minute only to be denied by Newcastle’s goalkeeper Tommy Wright. The ball however rebounded back to Phillips who improvised a superb curling lob that sailed over the despairing keeper and Newcastle defender on the line into the back of the net. A goal of sublime skill and imagination, a Super Kev classic in the Tyne and Wear derby.
The title of the book “Sunderland have scored, it’s 2-1” is taken from the commentary by John Motson for BBC's Match of the Day.
