With the game goaless in the 83rd minute, Best picked the ball up near the half way line from a knockdown. The Northern Ireland star turned and began a breathtaking run towards goal gliding past Sheffield United challenges. Best was driven wide of the goal but finished with a devastating shot across the keeper and in off the post. Old Trafford had just witnessed one of the greatest goals in it's history. Alan Gowling added a second for United three minutes later as the home side sealed a 2 - 0 win.
