At a full Goodison Park, Everton started badly going 2-0 down against the Dons. Graham Stuart pulled one back before half time with a penalty to give the Toffees hope. In the second half it took until the 67th minute before Everton equalised with a fantastic long range goal from Barry Horne.

With the tension building Everton were still in the relegation zone and needed a winner. In the 81st minute Stuart played a one-two with Tony Cottee and hit a low bobbling shot past Hans Segers to put the Blues 3-2 ahead. The Evertonians invaded the pitch in celebration and for the first time on this final day of tension Everton were out of the drop zone. The Great Escape was on!

The final whistle blew and Everton had survived on a day that no Everton fan would ever forget. As the dust settled it was Oldham Athletic and a very unlucky Sheffield United who were relegated. United conceded a last minute goal when pushing for a winner to send them down when a draw would of been enough for the Blades.
