Jimmy Glass winning goal for Carlisle United v Plymouth Argyle - Division Three 1999 - Football Print - Book Cover Poster (Various Sizes)
An iconic football moment is captured in this classic book cover poster.
This version depicts the moment when an on loan goalkeeper became a football legend. It was the final day of the Third Division season in 1999 and Carlisle United had to win to stay in the Football League.
The match between Carlisle United and Plymouth Argyle at Brunton Park was level at 1-1. Lee Phillips had put Plymouth ahead before club captain David Brightwell had equalised from long-range. The home side heard that Scarborough (the other team in danger of relegation) had only drawn with Peterborough. If United could get a winning goal they would stay up, but time was running out.
In the 90th minute Carlisle won a corner and the home goalkeeper, Jimmy Glass, ran the length of the pitch and joined his team mates in the penalty area. The ball was played in by Graham Anthony and Scott Dobie powered a header on target. The Plymouth keeper, James Dungey, pushed the header out into the path of Glass. As the ball dropped the goalkeeper smashed an unstoppable volley into the net for the most dramatic last minute winning goal you will ever see. The final whistle blew… Carlisle United stayed up, Scarborough went down, the home crowd invaded the pitch and Jimmy Glass became a football legend.
