Boreham Wood led 1-0 at half time following a Matt Rush finish. The Wood increased their lead in the 69th minute when Abdul Abdulmalik curled home. The Dale hit back in the 78th minute through Tyler Smith but it looked as though Boreham Wood would hold on.
Deep into stoppage time Casey Pettit played a long ball into the area and Mani Dieseruvwe powered home a header, via a slight deflection, to level in the 97th minute.
The game went into extra-time and finally penalties to decide who would be promoted to the English Football League. In the shootout Oliver Whatmuff was the hero with two saves as Rochdale won 3-1 on penalties for their first win in three attempts at Wembley.
