The first leg had ended 1-0 to Bucharest and after 24 minutes the semi final looked over as the visitors took a 2-0 lead (3-0 on aggregate with two away goals!). Middlesbrough needed to score four goals to go through!! Maccarone fired home in the 33rd minute before Mark Viduka headed home in the 64th minute. The game was 2-2 on the night but 3-2 to Steaua overall. In the 73rd minute Chris Riggott bundled home and Boro led 3-2 on the night, but Bucharest still would go through on the away goals rule. In the last minute Stewart Downing crossed from the left wing and Maccarone scored with a sublime flying header. The Riverside erupted as Boro completed one of European footballs greatest ever comebacks.
