The home side could have qualified for their first major tournament in 30 years with a win but fell behind when Richard Guzmics prodded home for Hungary. Chris Baird was then sent off and defeat looked inevitable until Lafferty smashed home the late late equaliser. In the 93rd minute Hungary‘s goalkeeper parried Niall McGinn's long range shot into Lafferty’s path and he drilled his shot high into the net. Northern Ireland went on to qualify and the Green and White Army marched on to the Euro finals in France.
