The crowd was an outstanding 85,021 as both teams were backed by their ever loyal fans. In a thrilling encounter Sunderland took the lead in the 38th minute with an Aiden McGeady free-kick and looked to be heading for glory. Pompey however had other ideas and equalised in the 82nd minute when Nathan Thompson headed home. The match went into extra-time and in the 114th minute Jamal Lowe controlled a long ball forward before sending a perfect lob over the stranded Black Cats goalkeeper. Amazingly there was another twist in the tale as McGeady fired home in the final minute to send the game to penalties. Lee Catermole missed for Sunderland and Oli Hawkins struck home as Portsmouth won 5-4 on penalties. Kenny Jackett's side lifted the trophy to wild celebrations in the Blue end of Wembley!
