With the match goaless in the 70th minute, substitute goalkeeper Darren Randolph launched a kick down field. Shane Long, also on as a second half substitute, curved his run and outpaced the German defence to the bouncing ball. As Long burst into the penalty area he unleashed a ferocious shot across Manuel Neuer and into the net. It proved to be the winner and the capacity crowd in the Aviva Stadium went wild at the final whistle as Ireland completed a historic victory.
