This version illustrates the jaw dropping comeback to win the League One Play-Off Semi Final in 2023. The Owls had lost the first leg against Peterborough United 4-0 and the second leg seemed a pointless exercise.
However Wednesday had other ideas as they won an early penalty which Michael Smith slotted home in the 9th minute. The Hillsborough crowd really started to believe that something special could happen when in the 25th minute Lee Gregory poked home.
The second half proved just as eventful as Reece James scored to make it 3-0 on the night... Wednesday only trailed by one goal. Chances were created and missed before Liam Palmer sent the South Yorkshire fans into ecstasy with a 98th minute leveller. The home side had taken the game into extra time and all was to play for.
In another twist to the tale Peterborough then scored in the first half of extra time with a deflected Nathan Thompson header to give them a 5-4 lead on aggregate. Wednesday somehow came back again and levelled the scores with a 112th minute Callum Paterson goal.
The final whistle blew on a remarkable game of football and Sheffield Wednesday and Peterborough United were tied 5-5. The game would be decided on penalties.
With the score 4-3 to the Owls, Peterborough's Dan Butler saw his effort hit the crossbar and fly over giving Wednesday the chance to complete a miraculous win. Jack Hunt fired home and Sheffield Wednesday had completed the greatest comeback in play-off history.
