Late in the game Shaun Goater in his final career game was substituted for Gray who would end the game as the hero of the day. In the 87th minute the Shrimpers broke forward, Kevin Maher fed Gray on the left who cut into the box and smashed home (with the help of a deflection) the only goal of the game to the delight of the 11,387 crowd. Southend United were Champions and heading up to the Championship.
