In the 22nd minute Asprilla won a penalty and slotted it home to give the Magpies the lead. Less than ten minutes later it was the Colombian who finished with a powerful header from Keith Gillespie's cross. 

Four minutes into the second half Asprilla completed his hat-trick with another header. Gillespie was again the provider with an amazing run down the right wing before a pin point cross into the box. Asprilla rose the highest and powered his header past the helpless Ruud Hesp in the Barcelona goal. The Colombian wheeled away in delight and celebrated with a cartwheel in front of a delirious home crowd.

Barca struck back in the 73rd minute when Luis Enrique scored and nerves began to surface when Luís Figo made it 3-2 late on. Newcastle held on and Kenny Dalglish's side took maximum points on an unforgettable night of drama.
