It started badly as the hosts took a third minute lead which was quickly cancelled out when Troy Parrott slotted home a penalty in the 15th minute. Hungary then retook the lead with a screamer from Barnabas Varga in the 37th minute.
As the game entered the final ten minutes Parrott struck again to level the match. With the clock in the 95th minute a long ball from Caoimhín Kelleher was headed on by Liam Scales and Parrott snuck in at the near post to poke home the winner and complete a remarkable hat-trick.
The Republic of Ireland had snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat and were heading for the World Cup Play-Off's amid wild celebrations on and off the pitch.
