In an exciting match at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, Reading took the lead after 30 minutes when Jamie Cureton volleyed home. Walsall levelled just after half time with a Don Goodman finish. The score remained 1-1 after 90 minutes and went into extra time.
Martin Butler headed Reading 2–1 up in the first minute of extra-time but were pegged back in the 107th minute when Tony Rougier scored a bizarre own goal deflecting a clearance from Barry Hunter into his own net.
Two minutes later Darren Byfield gave Walsall the lead as he turned and scored with a low shot from outside the area. It proved to be the winer as the match ended 3–2 and Walsall were promoted to the First Division.
